Have you ever noticed how quickly you tune out when someone at a party only talks about themselves?
The same exact emotional disconnect happens when your subscribers open a promotional email that is entirely focused on you. We have all been guilty of “me-centric” marketing, trying to showcase our own successes or why we love a product. But your subscribers do not care about you; they care about their own problems. If your emails are causing mass unsubscribes, it is time to face this hard truth. Email marketing personalization is your key to massive profits.
Learning the Hard Way: My Early Email Blunders
When I look back at my early affiliate campaigns, I cringe at how often I used the word “I.” I would explain why I liked a software, or why I thought it was a great deal. However, subscribers to your opt-in list want you to answer “what’s in it for me”. They are interested in how the product or service will help them achieve their goals, feel better, look better, deal with pressing problems, solve problems, or answer questions. Why YOU think they should buy the product or service you’re selling doesn’t really matter to them.
Why Empathy is Your Best Conversion Tool
Personalization and empathy are the absolute cornerstones of modern email marketing. According to a 2026 report by Mailmend, personalized emails achieve a massive 29% higher open rate and a 41% higher click-through rate. You are sending emails to actual people, not just digital addresses. A business executive in New York, a housewife in Toledo, and a rancher in Texas don’t have much in common, but all of them are human beings who chose to sign up for your mailing list. You must concentrate your message on the common desires and pain points that unite them.
As an affiliate marketer, it is incredibly easy to get caught up in the features of a product or why you personally love it. But the harsh truth is that your readers don’t actually care about you or the technical specs of what you are selling. They only care about how it solves their specific problems. So you must use the “WIIFM” rule: “What’s In It For Me“?
The “I” to “You” Copywriting Challenge
To instantly fix this, I challenge you to review your latest marketing email and try a simple exercise. Rearrange the sentence so that “YOU” appears in place of “I” in every instance. If the sentence cannot be altered, remove it, because it is entirely useless to your conversion goal. The word “sales” does not contain the pronoun “I,” and eliminating it helps keep the recipients’ attention on how the product meets their needs. Speak directly to them, addressing their pain points with empathy and a casual, professional tone.
Treat Your List Like Real People (And Watch Sales Grow)
Remember that a massive 80% of consumers are more likely to make a purchase when brands offer personalized experiences, according to recent Sender data. Start treating the individuals on your opt-in list with respect and deep consideration for their time. Use your autoresponder’s personalization options to greet them by name, which instantly builds a bridge of trust. When you stop talking about yourself and start solving their problems, your affiliate sales will naturally multiply.
Stop treating your list like a diary and start treating it like a dedicated help desk for your readers! Go into your autoresponder right now and rewrite your welcome sequence to focus entirely on the word “YOU.” Watch how quickly your audience engagement turns around.

Warmest regards,
Josh
