The $124 Mistake…
I was serving in the US Army when I first stumbled across affiliate marketing 16 years ago. I knew I wasn’t a career soldier, but I didn’t really have a plan for what to do after. Just before I deployed to Iraq, I saw a sales page on how to make easy money through affiliate marketing. It was only $27, so I figured, “Why not?”
I pulled out my credit card then and there. And bought the upsell for $97 while I was at it. I thought it was the beginning of Easy Street!
Boy, was I mistaken…
What came next was over a decade of struggle. I bought course-after-course. For some reason, I just couldn’t get it right. My lead page didn’t attract subscribers, my ad copy didn’t get clicks, and my sales pages flatlined. I thought I was doomed.
In the meantime, while I was struggling, I went to college. Got a degree in Information Technology (gotta have a backup plan, right?) Started a family. I have the most wonderful, supportive wife, two beautiful daughters, two incredibly talented sons, a cat that doesn’t much like anybody but we love her anyway, and two of the goodest boys there are.
After college, I landed a job as an IT Help Desk Technician. I worked my way from the Help Desk to Tier 2 Tech Support, and from there to a Systems Administrator position, earning professional certifications along the way. I built a stable career in IT. I was proud of it, but at the end of the day, I was still trading my time for money. I was still “working for the man”, and that dream of true affiliate freedom was still nagging at the back of my mind.
And after a while, affiliate marketing just kind of… became a thing I used to be interested in. I stopped trying. After all, why keep struggling at something that clearly wasn’t working when you have a successful career already?
The $5,000 Turning Point
Then one day a couple of years ago, my boss called me into her office. She had an opportunity for me to become certified in Generative AI through a week-long, 40 hour Google course. Once again, I thought, “Why not? One more certificate for the wall”. This AI thing seemed to be all the rage at the moment.
I enrolled in the course. The company was paying almost $5,000 for me to be there. That’s a thousand bucks a day.
When I tell you that this course was mind-boggling, believe-you-me, I was floored. All the things that Generative AI was capable of doing, just blew me away. I no longer saw AI as this “fad” that would blow away soon, I saw it as the powerful tool that it was.
About halfway through the course, when we were learning about image and video generation on Day 3, it started clicking together. “Could I use this in affiliate marketing?”
I was almost embarrassed it even crossed my mind. I had tried and failed so many times; did I really have it in me to give it another go?
I finished the Generative AI course. I studied for a couple of weeks, an hour or two each day. And my mind kept wondering.
Three weeks after completing the Google course, I took my Generative AI Certification Exam. It was hard. But I did it – I passed! I felt truly accomplished.
But still, the thoughts of using this knowledge for affiliate marketing were nagging at me. So I did what I swore I would never do again: I went online, searching for an affiliate marketing info product, this time centered around AI. Lo’ and behold, what a breadth of knowledge there was! I had stumbled across a gold mine of information.
The Google certification was amazing for learning the tech, but corporate training doesn’t teach you how to build a business or sell products. I needed to know how to apply this AI magic specifically to affiliate marketing. That’s when I stumbled across a course for just $1. I pulled out my credit card and went through the checkout process as fast as I could.
And let me tell you fine folks, it was game-changing. FINALLY, I could put what I had learned to good use for myself.
Life Looks a Lot Different Today
These days, I spend most of my time building model cars and Gundams, playing video games with my kids, taking my dogs for long walks, or taking my wife out on the town for lunch. If there’s a model convention within a few hours driving time, you can be sure to see me there (I’ve even won a couple of awards and had a few kits featured in magazines!)
These days, I am very blessed.
Every week, I spend 2 to 3 hours making more content for my blog, writing informative emails for my list, or planning an ad campaign. That’s really all it takes. Usually I can put out a week’s worth of content in about half that time, but I’m always looking to grow even further.
